Privacy Policy

Effective 11 May 2026 Last updated 15 August 2026 Applies to MoneyNest for Android

MoneyNest ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what the MoneyNest mobile application stores, which device permissions it uses and why, and which third-party services are involved when you back up your data or see an advertisement.

In short

  • Your financial records — expenses, income, accounts, budgets, categories, loans and goals — are stored on your device, not on our servers.
  • There is no MoneyNest account, no sign-up and no password held by us.
  • Camera, SMS and Contacts access is optional, feature-specific, and processed on your device.
  • Backups go to your own Google Drive, only when you start them.
  • The app shows advertisements and reports crashes, which involve Google services described in sections 6 and 7.

01Who this policy covers

This policy applies to the MoneyNest mobile application for Android (com.moneynest.budgettracker) and to this website. It describes how the app handles information when you use it to track expenses and income, plan budgets, scan receipts, record loans, and back up or export your data.

MoneyNest does not require you to create an account. You can use the entire app without signing in, and without an internet connection.

02Data stored on your device

MoneyNest is a local-first application. The following information is written to storage on your own device and is not transmitted to us:

  • Transactions you record — amounts, dates, notes, categories and tags
  • Accounts and balances, including cash, bank and mobile wallet accounts
  • Budgets, savings goals and recurring transaction rules
  • Loan records, including the person's name and payment history you enter
  • Receipt images you capture and the text extracted from them
  • App settings such as theme, language, currency, reminders and passcode configuration

We operate no server that receives or stores this data. Uninstalling the app removes it from your device.

03What we never collect

To be explicit, MoneyNest does not:

  • Ask for or store your bank credentials, card numbers, PINs or one-time passwords
  • Connect to your bank or any financial institution on your behalf
  • Upload your transactions, receipts, contacts or SMS messages to our servers
  • Sell or rent your personal information to anyone

04Permissions and why the app asks

Each permission below powers one specific feature. Android asks for the sensitive ones at the moment you first use that feature, and you can decline or revoke any of them later in your device settings — the rest of the app keeps working.

  • Camera Optional android.permission.CAMERA Used only by the receipt scanner, to photograph a receipt. The image is read on your device using on-device text recognition (Google ML Kit) to fill in the amount and details. Receipt images and the recognised text stay on your device.
  • SMS Optional Used only if you turn on SMS transaction detection. The app then reads transaction messages from banks and mobile wallets on your device to suggest a matching expense or income entry. Messages are parsed locally, nothing is saved until you confirm the suggestion, and message contents are never transmitted to us. The feature is off until you enable it.
  • Contacts Optional android.permission.READ_CONTACTS Used only in the loan tracker, so you can pick a person from your contacts instead of typing their name when recording money lent or borrowed. Only the name you select is saved into your local loan record. Your contact list is not uploaded or stored anywhere else.
  • Biometrics Optional android.permission.USE_BIOMETRIC Used only to unlock the app with your fingerprint or face when you enable the app lock. Authentication is handled by Android; MoneyNest never receives or stores your biometric data.
  • Notifications & alarms Optional POST_NOTIFICATIONS Used to deliver the reminders and budget alerts you schedule. Related permissions (SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM, RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) allow reminders to fire at the right time and to survive a device restart. Reminders are generated on your device.
  • Internet & network state Required INTERNET Used for the connected parts of the app: Google Drive backup and restore that you start, serving advertisements, crash reporting, in-app update and review prompts, and currency exchange rates where applicable. Your financial records are not sent over the network by any of these.

05Google Drive backup

Backup is optional and manual. If you choose to back up, you sign in with Google and the app writes a backup file of your MoneyNest data to your own Google Drive account. The transfer happens directly between your device and Google over an encrypted HTTPS connection.

We do not receive a copy of the backup, and we have no access to your Google Drive. The file is governed by your own Google account settings — you can view or delete it from Drive at any time. Signing out of Google in the app ends its access.

Please note: a backup file placed in your Google Drive is only as protected as the Google account holding it. We recommend keeping two-factor authentication enabled on that account.

06Advertising

MoneyNest is free and displays advertisements supplied by Google AdMob. To serve them, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may access your device's Advertising ID (com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID) along with technical information such as device type, operating system version, coarse location derived from your IP address, and ad interaction events.

This information is handled by Google as described in the Google Privacy & Terms. Your MoneyNest financial data is never shared with advertisers or used to target ads. Advertising involves only the identifiers and device signals described above.

You can reset or delete your Advertising ID, and opt out of ad personalisation, in Settings → Privacy → Ads on your Android device.

07Crash reports and diagnostics

To find and fix problems, MoneyNest uses Firebase Crashlytics. When the app crashes or hits a serious error, a report is sent to Google containing technical details such as the device model, operating system version, app version, the state of the app at the time, and a stack trace.

These reports are used solely to diagnose stability problems. They do not include the contents of your transactions, receipts, contacts or messages.

08Third-party services

The services below are involved in specific features. Each has its own privacy policy governing the data it receives.

Service Used for Data involved
Google Play Services Core Android functionality, in-app update and review prompts Device and app identifiers
Google AdMob Serving advertisements Advertising ID, device signals, ad interactions
Firebase Crashlytics Crash and error reporting Device model, OS and app version, stack traces
Google Sign-In & Drive API Backup and restore you initiate Your Google account, the backup file in your Drive
Google ML Kit Reading text from receipts Processed on your device; images are not uploaded

09Data retention and deletion

Because your records live on your device, you control how long they are kept. You can delete individual entries, clear data in your device's app settings, or uninstall the app to remove everything it stored locally.

Backup files are retained in your Google Drive until you delete them there. Exported PDF, Excel and CSV reports are ordinary files saved wherever you choose, and remain until you remove them. Diagnostic reports held by Google are retained under Google's own retention schedule.

10Security

MoneyNest offers a passcode and biometric app lock to keep your records private on a shared device. Sensitive values such as your passcode and sign-in tokens are held in Android's encrypted storage rather than in plain preferences, and all network connections the app makes use HTTPS.

No method of storage or transmission is completely secure. Keeping your device locked, your operating system updated, and the app lock enabled remains the most effective protection for your data.

11Children's privacy

MoneyNest is a general-audience budgeting tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us and we will address it.

12Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves — for example when a feature is added or a third-party service changes. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version, and significant changes will be highlighted in the app or its store listing.

13Financial disclaimer

MoneyNest is a tool for personal expense tracking and budgeting. It does not provide banking, lending, credit, investment or financial advisory services, and it does not move money or connect to financial institutions on your behalf.
